Direct digital frequency synthesis (DDS) has fast frequency switching and modulation capabilities and is widely used. However, when low power and low cost are the main considerations, DDS often has to take a back seat to analog phase-locked loops (PLLs). The AD9913 from Analog Devices has changed this situation, not only providing the fast switching and modulation flexibility of DDS technology within a 125 MHz output bandwidth, but also with low power consumption characteristics similar to PLLs, with a power consumption of only about 50 mW.
