Energy Storage Systems for Solar Photovoltaic and Wind Turbine Power Generation In order for solar photovoltaic (PV) installations and wind turbine systems to provide energy output for longer periods of time than conditions would allow (due to darkness and lack of wind speed), it is necessary to store the energy that has been generated for later use as needed. For applications where the generated energy is stored in lithium-ion batteries, Analog Devices’ advanced technology solutions enable the system to operate safely and efficiently regardless of temperature and time. The following figure shows a high-level system block diagram of a solar PV system, where the storage devices are the same as for a wind turbine system. Lithium-ion batteries are typically grouped in units of 6 to 12 and then bolted together in series to produce the desired overall stack voltage (two battery cells are shown in the following figure).
