Carbadox is a synthetic antimicrobial used in pigs. It is rapidly metabolized to quinoxaline-2-carboxylic acid via an intermediate in the body. Carbadox residues in food are difficult to detect. The test method uses quinoxaline-2-carboxylic acid as the analytical target. The positive list in Japan specifies HPLC method (quantitative test) and LCMS method (confirmatory test). This article introduces an analysis example of quinoxaline-2-carboxylic acid in pork. For reference, simultaneous analysis of carbadox was also performed.
