The AAT3686 charge management chip is a member of the AnalogicTechTM comprehensive power management chip family. The AAT3686 is a highly integrated USB/adapter input Li-ion/Polymer charging chip that greatly reduces the need for external components, as shown in Figure 1. The AAT3686 can accurately regulate battery voltage and current for 4.2 V Li-ion/Li-polymer batteries. The AAT3686 adapter charging input current can be set to a maximum of 1.5 A. When the adapter is not used, the battery can be charged through the USB power supply when connected to the USB charging. Depending on the USB port, the two USB charging currents of the AAT3686 can be independently set to a maximum of 500 mA. An optional charge reduction circuit is also built into the chip, allowing the user to charge the battery through the current of the USB port while keeping the interface voltage adjustable. When the adapter is plugged in, USB charging is disabled. Battery temperature and charge status are monitored in error conditions. If an overvoltage or overtemperature condition occurs, the device will automatically shut down, thereby protecting the charging device, the control system and the battery being charged. Two external LEDs on the status detection output pin indicate the battery charge status. The AAT3686 has a serial output port that can report 22 states to the microcontroller.
