GPRS Principles Common Terms IMSI Like GSM, GPRS also uses the International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) as a means of identifying its own users. 1 Composition of IMSI The composition structure of IMSI is shown in Figure 9-1. Composition Structure of IMSI IMSI consists of three parts: 1) Mobile Country Code (MCC), which contains three digits and uniquely identifies the country where the mobile user lives. 2) Mobile Network Code (MNC), which contains two or three digits and identifies the GSM PLMN to which the mobile user belongs. The length of MNC is related to the value of MCC. In a single MCC area, it is generally not recommended to use a mixture of two and three digits for MNC. 3) Mobile Subscriber Identification Number (MSIN), which identifies a mobile user within a GSM PLMN. MNC and MSIN together form the National Mobile Subscriber Identity (NMSI). 2 Allocation Principle IMSI can only contain numeric characters (0 to 9) and cannot exceed 15 digits. The allocation of MCC is managed by ITU. NMSI is the responsibility of each operator or national policy department.
