A new engine misfire detection method is discussed. The engine\'s own spark plug is used as a sensor. By applying a bias voltage, a stable ion current is formed between the two electrodes of the spark plug. When a misfire occurs, the amplitude of the ion current between the spark plugs changes. By monitoring the change in amplitude, misfire detection can be achieved. During the test, misfires are generated by increasing the spark plug gap, increasing carbon deposits between the spark plug electrodes, and power failure. At the same time, the ion current misfire signal is recorded and detected. The test results show that the ion current method is accurate, intuitive, and convenient for detecting misfires.
