Voice-over-Wi-Fi Implementation with Single Stream 802.11n Narasimhan Venkatesh Chief Wireless Architect, Redpine Signals The growth of wireless networking, based on the IEEE 802.11 family of wireless LAN standards, is arguably the technology world’s greatest success story in recent years. Aside from the standards themselves, the ubiquitous adoption of WLANs around the world has been aided and accelerated by the Wi-Fi Alliance’s interoperability testing and certification efforts—so much so that the term Wi-Fi has generally replaced “WLAN.” In the early days of wireless LAN (WLAN) growth, its primary role was to provide a compatible wireless data network alternative to wired LAN connections. However, as its capabilities grew—and its standards were enhanced to provide higher data rates, better quality of service, and special modes such as power saving—it quickly became an integral part of a wide range of electronic devices, including phones, game consoles, music players, sensors, and other consumer electronics. Of these applications, one of the fastest growing is the use of voice over wireless networks—thanks in part to the popularity of a variety of commercial VoIP services. Recognizing the potential of Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi), the Wi-Fi Alliance has launched a certification program, called Voice-Personal, that ensures that Wi-Fi devices meet the requirements for VoWiFi in a home or small office environment. Unlike previous Wi-Fi Alliance certifications that focused on protocol compliance and interoperability, this Wi-Fi certified Voice-Personal has expanded to focus on specific applications and is based on performance testing. The program was launched in July 2008, and Redpine Signals\' Lite-Fi was one of the first products to support the certification. In this article, we will provide a comprehensive understanding of VoWiFi performance by explaining the parameters that affect user experience satisfaction...
