The LTC4217 is suitable for a variety of RAID, server, telecom and industrial applications, especially on compact boards using technologies such as Fibre Channel, where power is generally limited to less than 25W due to the small size of such boards and the inability to dissipate a lot of heat. These factors were taken into account when designing the hot swap operation and integration of the LTC4217. At startup, inrush current is controlled by limiting the gate ramp rate to a safe 0.3V/ms. Load current is monitored by sensing the voltage across the internal 7.5mΩ sense resistor and adjusting the internal 25mΩ MOSFET gate-source voltage accordingly. A separate ISET pin allows the 2% accurate (2A) current limit threshold to be adjusted as needed during startup and normal operation. At the same time, current foldback and power good circuits ensure that the switch is protected from excessive load current and indicate whether a good power state is maintained. The LTC4217 also features current monitoring outputs, temperature monitoring outputs and fault outputs, 2% accurate overvoltage and undervoltage protection, and an adjustable current limit timer. A dedicated 12V version (LTC4217-12) is also available with preset 12V specific thresholds. The LTC4217 is available in commercial and industrial versions supporting operating temperature ranges of 0°C to 70°C and -40°C to 85°C, respectively.
