The TCP/IP protocol suite allows computers of all types, made by many different manufacturers, to communicate with each other, running completely different operating systems. This is surprising because it has done much more than was originally envisioned. TCP/IP originated as a packet switching network research project funded by the U.S. government in the late 1960s, and by the 1990s had become the most commonly used form of networking between computers. It is a truly open system because the definition of the protocol suite and its multiple implementations are publicly available at little or no cost. It became the basis for what is known as the \"global Internet\" or \"Internet,\" a wide area network (WAN) that includes more than 1 million computers around the world.
