Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)Objective: Verification that the product is robust against electrostatic discharge, whichcan be excepted during handling of the devices. The ESD robustness isequivalent to the maximum voltage this product can withstand. Testing isdone according to the Human Body Model as described below.Human Body Model (HBM)Method: EIA/JESD22-A114-BFlow: Determination of all relevant pins. Discharge according to the Human BodyModel (1.5 kΩ, 100 pF, for each pin combination, one positive and onenegative discharge). The specified ESD robustness determines the stress voltages used for theESD test. A set of devices for the stress voltage 0 V is used for referencepurpose only. The safe guard voltage can be used to demonstrate that the product is safein its limits. If the product has different ESD specifications for individual pins then theESD test has to be performed for these pins separately.Comment: The human body ESD is simulated by discharging a 100 pF capacitorthrough a 1500 Ω resistor. The capacitor is charged and discharged onto apin using both plus and minus polarities while simultaneously contactingeither a VSS (ground) or VCC (Power) pin as reference. The Human Body Model simulates the electrostatic discharge which istypically observed during manual handling of devices from a person withoutESD protection. The circuit diagram for this procedure is shown below.
