When the circuit is in a static (dark) state, the electromagnet M flows through current. Once sufficient intensity of light shines on the phototransistor to turn it on, the final transistor is in a cut-off state and the electromagnet is released. Due to the feedback to the base of the phototransistor through the 1M ohm resistor, the phototransistor is still turned on even if the light is removed. It cannot return to the initial state until the reset button T is pressed. The Darlington transistor can be replaced by an amplifier with a larger amplification factor.
