Voltage Reference and Time Reference

All analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) and digital-to-analog converters (DACs) require a reference signal, usually a voltage reference. The digital output of an ADC represents the ratio of the analog input to its reference; the digital input of a DAC represents the ratio of the analog output to its reference. Some converters have an internal reference, while others require an external reference. In any case, all converters must have a voltage (or current) reference.
