Abstract: This paper explains the causes of lightning formation, the process of its generation, and the methods of lightning protection, so as to correctly select lightning protection devices.

　　With the development of electronic technology, electronic devices have entered the era of large-scale integrated circuits. The functions of electronic devices have been improved, and the reliability of operation has been continuously improved, but the ability to protect against lightning has been greatly reduced. Now, the losses caused by lightning strikes each year are in the billions of yuan, so research on protecting microelectronic devices from lightning hazards has become an important topic. Although many lightning protection methods and many lightning protection devices have emerged in the past two centuries, due to incomplete understanding of lightning or prejudice against device performance, the expected effect is often not achieved. Due to inappropriate methods, a lot of money has been wasted. This article explains the causes of lightning and points out the current misunderstandings in lightning protection, trying to break the seemingly frozen norms of lightning protection methods in order to make progress in lightning protection research.
