IR's small, high-performance, high-voltage IC simplifies HID ballast design[Copy link]
International Rectifier introduces the IRS2453D series of 600V self-excited full-bridge driver ICs. The series is suitable for HID ballast applications such as general lighting, outdoor lighting and projectors.
The new device uses IR's proprietary high-voltage integrated circuit (HVIC) technology to integrate two high-side and two low-side gate drivers. This helps improve device performance, meet tighter specifications, improve temperature stability, and integrate previously unavailable features.
The IRS2453D has a simple RC network for oscillator programming, eliminating the need for two synchronous half-bridge drivers. In contrast, the solution using two SO-8 packaged driver ICs requires a separate oscillator to drive each half-bridge, which will cause mismatches in timing due to tolerances and temperature, resulting in asymmetric voltages on the load. In lighting applications, this will cause mercury migration and shorten lamp life. The IRS2453D effectively solves this problem. It uses a single oscillator to drive two half-bridge drivers to ensure accurate matching over the entire temperature and supply voltage range.
The IRS2453D also greatly simplifies the overall design by integrating latching and non-latching shutdown inputs, saving up to seven devices. Latching shutdown can implement different protection functions, such as periodic overcurrent, open load or short-circuit detection without additional components, while non-latching shutdown provides a simpler interface to various microcontrollers for power management applications. The
IRS2453D is a lead-free device available in 14-pin DIP and SO packages and includes a 50% duty cycle, a fixed 1 microsecond (typical) internal dead time, and an integrated bootstrap circuit. The new IC is designed for the low-frequency AC voltage required to drive HID lamps and is also suitable for other high-frequency applications, such as fluorescent ballasts and general-purpose circuits such as power supplies.
Yan Guofu, IR China Sales Director, pointed out: "The IRS2453D designed for HID ballasts is another innovation in our industry-leading HVIC product series. It can reduce the number of components, reduce the size, improve reliability, and simplify circuit design."
Other key specifications of the IRS2453D include a 15.6V Zener secondary clamp VCC and a 140μA typical micro-power startup circuit. Noise immunity is achieved by the low di/dt peak of the gate driver and the undervoltage lockout hysteresis function of more than 1.5V.
The IRS2453DPbF, IRS2453DSPbF and IRS2453DSTRPbF are now available, and all products comply with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electronic Products (RoHS).
