Android smartphones will soon have facial recognition [Copy link]

Driven by Apple and Samsung, smartphone manufacturers will gradually adopt facial recognition technology. It is expected that facial recognition technology will become a standard feature of smartphones in the future. In 2013, Apple announced the use of Touch ID has become a trend in mobile consumer applications. Smartphone manufacturers around the world have followed Apple’s lead and integrated fingerprint sensors into their devices. This has made fingerprint sensor-based security a standard feature in affordable mobile phones. As a result, more than 1 billion smartphones are expected to be equipped with fingerprint sensors in 2018.
The new Xiaomi Mi 8 smartphone uses a miniature VCSEL array from ams to ensure efficient operation of the always-on facial recognition system
ams AG (SIX: AMS), a leading global supplier of high performance sensor solutions, today announced that its low power IR VCSEL laser emitter PMSIL has successfully enabled the Android The Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition, the new flagship smartphone from the fast-growing Chinese brand Xiaomi, features a facial recognition system using an infrared (IR) vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) array from ams. The PMSIL is a complete VCSEL flood illuminator system with an integrated eye-safe interlock, excellent optical efficiency and minimal drain on the phone’s battery when emitting. The PMSIL is a compact package measuring just 3mm x 3mm x 1mm, which contains the emitter chip and diffuser. The emitter has a very high spectral stability over the entire operating temperature range and a very narrow spectral width of less than 1nm. Its carefully designed beam wavefront can be precisely configured to the specific application requirements of the smartphone. In the Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition, the PMSIL operates in an always-on mode to support face detection and recognition. The IR VCSEL emitter in the structured light system CS115 is also provided by ams. The IR emitter is an IR chip-on-substrate VCSEL array, which is known for its small size and high optical efficiency.
ams’ VCSEL technology is the result of 15 years of research and development, with several optimizations of the VCSEL manufacturing process technology, materials and packaging. In addition, customers can draw on the industry’s most comprehensive and well-validated test data and performance models, providing predictable performance characteristics as well as precise quality and reliability data.
ams’ collaboration with Xiaomi goes beyond the IR laser arrays: the company also supplies the TMD27253 ambient light sensor and proximity detection module for the Xiaomi Mi 8 and Xiaomi Mi 8SE models.
Hui Nie, General Manager of the VCSEL Product Line at ams, said: “Xiaomi is a leader in the Chinese smartphone market and is establishing itself globally through its bold and innovative design approach and its talent for combining advanced technology with beautiful styling. To match the ultra-thin, bezel-less design of the Mi 8 Explorer Edition, Xiaomi’s designers wanted to build the smallest possible facial recognition system, so they evaluated ams IR VCSEL arrays. When they tested the power consumption of ams devices against competing products, the overall advantage of ams devices became clear.”
