Qinghai-Tibet Railway is a milestone in my country's telecommunications construction[Copy link]
The nearly 2,000-kilometer Qinghai-Tibet Railway, which runs from Xining, the capital of Qinghai Province, westward through Golmud to Lhasa, was opened on July 1. This "third pole" railway with the highest altitude and longest line in the world is not only a miracle of railway transportation, but also a milestone in China's communication construction.
On June 30, Zhao Jibin, chairman of China Railway Communications, told reporters that the Qinghai-Tibet Railway communication project, which is mainly based on GSM-R, has successfully overcome the three major world problems of permafrost, high-cold hypoxia and ecological protection, which can be called a miracle in the history of China's communication construction.
Reporters learned that with the opening of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, China Railway Communications will plan to carry out full-service operations based on the GSM-R network in the next step. China Mobile's services have also covered the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, allowing this railway line to fully connect with the world.
"Communication" Third Pole
On the thousands of miles of railway line, ensuring the safe travel of trains requires information security provided by communications. On the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, it is even more important. High-cold hypoxia and ecological environment and crossing the permafrost are not only the difficulties of railway construction, but also the challenges faced by railway communications.
Guo Xiaozhao, spokesman of China Railway Communications Corporation, said in an interview with our reporter, "Most areas of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway are in the plateau with lack of oxygen, and the climate and geographical conditions are very complex. To ensure the communication safety of high-speed trains, there can be no negligence in railway communication."
According to the reporter, the GSM-R system that will be put into use on the Qinghai-Tibet Railway has a very unique feature. Its signal adopts double coverage, which is similar to double backup. The two signal control systems are staggered and overlapped. Once a system has problems and failures, the other system can still maintain normal communication. It meets the wireless communication requirements of the train running speed of up to 500 kilometers per hour, which is very suitable for the communication requirements of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway with very complex terrain and climate.
Jiang Chunsheng, general manager of the wireless department of China Railway Communications Corporation, told reporters that in order to ensure the communication safety of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, China Railway Communications Corporation Qinghai Branch has set up a GSM-R network management center in Xining, a GSM-R maintenance center in Golmud and Lhasa, and set up 5 communication work areas in Golmud, Tuotuohe, Lhasa, etc., with an average jurisdiction of nearly 300 kilometers for each work area.
"Most stations on the Qinghai-Tibet Railway do not have attendants and are unmanned. All functions are moved to the locomotive computer screen. On the computer screen of the Golmud Tietong Communication Maintenance Center, no matter which station you want to monitor, the computer screen can immediately display the temperature, humidity, battery and other conditions of the station's indoor screen, truly realizing unmanned remote control." Jiang Chunsheng said.
Tietong takes advantage of GSM-R.
In fact, as a GSM-R communication network designed specifically for railway communications, it is based on the GSM infrastructure and the advanced voice call services it provides, providing railway-specific dispatching services, and using this as an information platform to achieve a variety of communication services with private network characteristics.
However, since GSM-R is positioned as a private network, according to relevant regulations, the Qinghai-Tibet line GSM-R communication network can only be used for communication within the GSM-R private network, and currently cannot be interconnected with the public network. Communication on the Qinghai-Tibet line will be achieved through GSM-R terminals.
"With the rise of industries such as tourism on the Qinghai-Tibet line in the future, if GSM-R is still positioned in the private network and cannot be interconnected with the public network, it will be difficult to truly enhance the value contained in GSM-R." A senior Tietong official told reporters.
The person believes that from the perspective of communication services, the Qinghai-Tibet Railway GSM-R network should not only serve the private network, but also become a bridge to connect with the public network. On the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, there is a basis for multi-level cooperation between China Railway Communications and other operators.
At present, in addition to China Railway Communications, China Mobile has built nearly 200 base stations and repeaters along the entire Qinghai-Tibet Railway, with a network coverage rate of more than 80% along the entire line. All scenic spots along the line have achieved wireless coverage, becoming the only mobile communication operator covering the Qinghai-Tibet Railway.
"The most important thing for China Railway Communications at present is how to determine a strategic goal, clarify the next development direction, and how to take a distinctive path?" Zhao Jibin said when he was a guest in the "High-end Dialogue" column of this newspaper at the beginning of this year. From private network to public network and then to private network, China Railway Communications has been looking for a more suitable market positioning. In Zhao Jibin's view, China Railway Communications' advantages in private networks have not been fully utilized, and China Railway Communications should have a greater role in the railway network. And realizing the complementary advantages of private networks and public networks is the preferred solution.
On June 30, Zhao Jibin also admitted in an interview with our reporter that he would plan to develop multiple value-added services such as railway Internet access and railway office with partners on the GSM-R network in the future to further explore the value of GSM-R. "China Railway Communications Corporation hopes to play a more active role in the industrial chain."
In fact, China Railway Communications Corporation's senior management has high expectations for cluster communications including the GSM-R network. On the one hand, it hopes to accumulate operating experience for China Railway Communications Corporation through the opening of the Jiaoji Line, Daqin Line and Qinghai-Tibet Line GSM-R. In addition, if a complete set of GSM-R communication network is built, it will play a positive role in China Railway Communications Corporation's goal of "relying on railways, expanding professional users, highlighting characteristics, and strengthening regional markets."
Zhang Kejing, deputy general manager of Qinghai-Tibet Railway Company, said in an interview with our reporter, "For the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, this is a railway that represents the highest level and the highest technology in railway construction." The GSM-R railway integrated digital mobile communication system is combined with GPS satellite positioning technology to achieve a deep integration of communication and signal technology.
According to the reporter, the operation strategy of Tietong on the Qinghai-Tibet line mainly includes: In terms of private network, Tietong will use GSM-R mobile services to provide professional mobile services for railway freight and passenger transport and various value-added communication services. In terms of public network, in addition to developing fixed-line services along the line, Tietong will also use the fiber optic network throughout the country to build a virtual network to provide Internet services for corporate customer groups to work remotely. "At present, some operators have begun to discuss with us about the cooperation of the Qinghai-Tibet line fiber optic network." A person related to Tietong told our reporter.
Comprehensive crossing
Participating in the construction of the Qinghai-Tibet line communication network is not only the responsibility of Tietong as an operator, but also the common goal of China's communication companies and a comprehensive test of the strength of China's communication industry.
"China Mobile has listed the Qinghai-Tibet line project as a key project and a first-level trunk line project, and has given strong support in terms of funds and project construction." A person related to China Mobile told reporters.
It is understood that since the transmission and power resources along the Qinghai-Tibet Railway cannot be in place in time, in order to ensure that the mobile communication base station can be opened before July 1, China Mobile Communications has adopted a variety of transmission access methods such as optical fiber, microwave, satellite and solar power supply when arranging the construction.
"With the opening of base stations along the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, China Mobile's various business outlets will open soon. Mobile communication services in inland areas will also be available on the Qinghai-Tibet Railway in the future." The above-mentioned mobile person said.
In addition to the active participation of operators, equipment vendors are also enthusiastic about the Qinghai-Tibet Railway. Nortel Networks deployed a GSM-R test network for a 186-kilometer section of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway.
On the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, a series of silver-white wireless communication transmission base stations echo the railway line, forming the Qinghai-Tibet Railway's communication network. In fact, the development of Qinghai-Tibet Railway communications requires more participation from the communications industry. For China Mobile, China Railway Communications and equipment companies, working together, complementing each other, and realizing the common use of multiple communication methods will achieve the greatest "crossing" in the history of the communications industry.
