Microchip Technology has launched a new series of 8-bit flash microcontrollers that improve motor efficiency, reduce noise, expand range and extend life by adding new advanced motor control peripherals. They are suitable for automotive, industrial, electrical and consumer products. The market today has an increasing demand for the flexibility and integrated intelligence of cutting-edge electronic power and motor control systems. The new products are responding to this demand. This is because global environmental regulations are becoming increasingly stringent, so motor drive product manufacturers must actively improve energy efficiency.

Advanced motor control applications require very precise and energy-efficient operation. Microchip's new 40-pin PIC18F4331/4431 and 28-pin PIC18F2331/2431 microcontrollers provide advanced analog and digital feedback, as well as three-phase complementary pulse-width modulation (PWM) control systems.

The key to the PIC18Fxx31 family's increased performance and flexibility lies in three new modules designed for advanced motion and power control applications. The power control module is equipped with a three-phase PWM structure; the dynamic feedback module includes a quadrature encoder interface; and the third module consists of a fast analog-to-digital converter (ADC) operating at a frequency of 200ksps and can be synchronized with the PWM.

With these three modules, the system does not need to add any external motor control components such as high-speed converters and resonators, which reduces costs and saves space. Other major functions of PIC18Fxx31 include:

  1. Up to eight 14-bit resolution PWM channels, mid-range correction, programmable dead-time and two external fault-tolerant inputs;
  2. Two grab/compare/PWM modules;
  3. Built-in RC oscillator with eight frequencies to choose from, ranging from 8MHz to 31.25KHz;
  4. Four universal clocks;
  5. a clock supervisor to ensure operation is not affected by failures;
  6. An enhanced USART, supporting RS485, RS232 and LIN protocols;
  7. 256Bytes on-board, high-durability data EEPROM;
  8. Achieve 10MIPS performance at 40MHz frequency;
  9. A 16-level programmable low voltage detection module;
  10. nanoWatt technology to enhance power management capabilities.
With these features and enhanced design, the PIC18Fxx31 series is ideal for advanced power control and motor control applications such as stability control, temperature control, fuel and gas pumps, electronic power steering, throttle control in automobiles; appliances including dishwashers, refrigerators, washing machines and exhaust fans; industrial machines such as robotics, material handling, HVAC and vending machines; and consumer products including whirlpool bathtubs, toasters/ovens, bathroom exhaust fans, etc.

Microchip's development tools support the PIC18F4331/4431 and PIC18F2331/2431 microcontrollers, such as the free MPLAB IDE (Integrated Development Environment). Programming tools include the PRO MATE II full-featured modular device programmer, MPLAB ICD 2 in-circuit debugger/programmer, MPLAB ICE 2000/4000 in-circuit emulators, and the latest PICDEM MC motor control development board with graphical user interface (part number DM183011).

The PIC18F4331/4431 devices are available in 40-pin DIP, 44-pin TQFP and QFN packages. The PIC18F2331/2431 are available in 28-pin SDIP, SOIC and QFN packages. Samples of the four new products are available and they are already in production.
