The US-China patent dispute has ended. Domestic DVD players will pay MPEG LA $2.5 per unit. With the signing of the "MPEG-2 Patent Joint License" Memorandum of Understanding between MPEG LA and the China Electronic Audio Industry Association, the six-year DVD patent negotiations between China and the United States have been temporarily ended. According to the memorandum, Chinese companies will have to pay MPEG LA $2.50 in patent fees for every DVD player they sell after July 1, 2006. In addition, 6C, 3C, Thomson, Dolby and other patent owners or their authorized representatives who have reached patent licensing agreements with China will have to pay an additional dozen dollars in patent fees for every domestic DVD player sold in the future. About MPEG LA : MPEG LA is a global leader in one-stop technology platform patent licensing, enabling users to obtain patent rights necessary for a specific technology standard or platform from multiple patent holders in a single transaction. As long as independently managed one-stop patent licensing can provide convenient market choices and help users implement their technology choices, the licensing model pioneered and adopted by MPEG LA can provide a solution. Currently, MPEG LA's patent licensing portfolio includes essential patents from 57 countries. MPEG LA's patent license includes MPEG-2 digital video compression patents, which have become the most widely used standard in the history of consumer electronics.
