On June 12, people familiar with the matter revealed that China Mobile has recently launched a new round of large-scale customized terminal marketing activities. At least six mobile phone companies including Motorola, Nokia and NEC have received orders for customized mobile phones from China Mobile.
China Mobile currently attaches great importance to mobile phone customization. In October 2004, China Mobile customized more than ten mobile phones with one-key Internet access function at one time - "Xinji", which caused a sensation; after that, it launched the sales of customized mobile phones many times, including customizing popular music phones on the market.
It is reported that China Mobile's new round of customized terminals is mainly aimed at promoting data and attracting high-end users. The marketing activities lasted for two months and included cooperation with festivals and sports events such as the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
According to reports, Nokia, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, Samsung, NEC, Dopod and other brands were selected for terminal customization and have been put on the market since May. China Mobile's specific promotion method is that in its own business halls in cities above the county level, terminal manufacturers provide terminal products with prices better than the market retail price. The difference can be used to purchase China Mobile's service packages, which are divided into two parts: call charges and data service packages.
It is worth noting that, except for Dopod, which is a Taiwanese-invested enterprise, almost all other terminals are from foreign giants. Among the first batch of customized mobile phones launched nationwide by China Mobile, there were also Alcatel phones, which were later acquired by TCL. However, the customized music phones and the customized mobile phones this time almost always have the presence of foreign giants such as Motorola, Sony Ericsson, Samsung, NEC, Nokia, etc., and domestic brand mobile phones seem to be unable to keep up.
Some industry insiders believe that this is related to the high technical content of customized mobile phones and the slow response speed of domestic mobile phones. Previously, China Unicom's high-end CDMA World Wind mobile phone had similar problems, which were almost dominated by foreign brands until the emergence of domestic mobile phones such as Yulong Coolpad.
