UTStarcom Qualcomm cooperation equipment testing [Copy link]

UTStarcom, a leading communications equipment manufacturer, recently provided Qualcomm with its MovingMedia 2000 product based on IP wireless softswitch technology for use in Qualcomm's in-cabin mobile communications trials on United Airlines commercial aircraft.

The test flight took off from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport with a small CDMA base station on board. Using an in-cabin 3G "micro-cell" network, passengers on the test flight were able to make and receive calls and text messages using commercial CDMA mobile phones. The commercial CDMA phones were connected to UTStarcom's wireless soft switch equipment and connected to the ground via air-to-ground global satellite links to reach telephone networks around the world.

"As the telecommunications industry continues to evolve from wired to wireless, providing high-quality mobile phone services to passengers on commercial flights, trains and cruise ships around the world will become a must for future operators to attract new users," said Jack Ma, vice president of UTStarcom and president of the CDMA business unit. "UTStarcom is committed to developing the next generation of IP-based CDMA2000 technology. We are very proud to partner with Qualcomm to provide wireless communications for this historic test flight."

In March 2004, UTStarcom signed a commercial CDMA user unit and network equipment licensing agreement with Qualcomm. The agreement allows UTStarcom to develop, manufacture and sell user and network equipment based on CDMA2000?, WCDMA (UMTS) and TD-SCDMA. In addition, UTStarcom has formed an alliance with Qualcomm to jointly expand CDMA2000 technology to the core markets of GSM and WCDMA, and use the advantages of IP technology to provide more cost-effective solutions for emerging markets.

UTStarcom MovingMedia 2000 Solution

UTStarcom's MovingMedia 2000 is a full-featured wireless softswitch solution that integrates voice, data and multimedia applications, with signals passing through a softswitch-based network. MovingMedia 2000 supports 3GPP R99/R4 GSM/UMTS, 3GPP2 CDMA2000 1X and SIP-based networks, providing wireless data services such as short message service (SMS), Internet access, and complete mobile functions such as voicemail and prepaid functions.

The MovingMedia2000 system consists of distributed mobile switches, media gateways and IP-based CDMA base stations. MovingMedia 2000 allows operators to centrally control the network and allocate switching nodes (base stations and gateways) as needed, thereby minimizing investment costs and effectively reducing transmission-related operating expenses.
