1394 interface shrinks in PC market and turns to consumer market[Copy link]
1394 is being squeezed hard by USB in the PC and peripheral markets, but there are signs of new life in the consumer electronics (CE) market, according to In-Stat. The high-tech market research company said that digital TV, cable set-top boxes and DVD recorders are driving the growth of 1394a in the CE market. In addition, the High Definition Audio Video Network Alliance (HANA) has approved 1394 as a transmission medium for high-definition content, a move that may lead to the adoption of 1394 in home video networks.
In the PC field, 1394 has been successful in notebook PCs but has struggled in corporate desktops, which account for a large part of PC sales each year. However, Microsoft has announced that it will support 1394b in its next-generation Vista operating system, which may bring more benefits to 1394 in the PC market.
"By 2007, 1394 devices are expected to exceed those in the consumer electronics segment combined in the PC and PC peripheral segments," said In-Stat analyst Brian O'Rourke.
Recent In-Stat research found that:
· The total global market for 1394-enabled devices will grow from 115.8 million in 2005 to 219.9 million in 2010.
· If HANA is successful in promoting 1394b as a home networking technology, In-Stat experts predict that 1394b will appear in wall plates and stand-alone devices such as gateways, rather than in consumer electronics devices.
