Xinhuanet, Beijing, January 7th: The world's largest electronics show - the 2006 International Consumer Electronics Show opened on the 5th in Las Vegas, the gambling city of the United States. High-definition televisions, next-generation DVD players and full-featured communication tools made their debut, showing people the trend of the digital future.

The annual International Consumer Electronics Show is the world's largest industry electronics show. The exhibition halls are set up in five venues. 2,500 electronics companies from all over the world will display their latest products and services in the four-day electronics show, which is expected to attract 130,000 visitors.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates gave a keynote speech before the show opened, describing the current era as "the age of digital living, the age of digital work, and that means all these tools are going mainstream."

In addition to Microsoft's XBOX 360 game console, Gates also introduced the next-generation Windows operating system "Windows Vista" to be launched later this year. He revealed that a major feature of the operating system is the enhanced multimedia device management function, which can achieve better and faster interaction with mobile phones, computers and other multimedia tools through users' home and office networks.

The organizer of the exhibition, the Consumer Electronics Association of the United States, said that high-definition television sets are a highlight of this International Consumer Electronics Show. Gary Shapiro, president of the Consumer Electronics Association, said: "2006 will be the year of high-definition television." He predicted that as countries switch to digital signals, sales of high-definition television sets will exceed traditional television sets for the first time this year.

Microsoft also announced at the exhibition that the company will work with US telecommunications giant Verizon Communications to launch a wireless phone that supports Internet access and instant messaging through instant messaging software.

Internet search giant Google will also launch its own set of Internet tools, allowing users to download TV videos and popular software in packages, challenging the digital world dominated by Microsoft.

Toshiba Corporation of Japan announced at the exhibition that it will launch high-definition DVD players in the US market in March this year. High-definition DVD playback technology will provide users with the same image quality as in theaters and offer more new options for interactive entertainment.

South Korea's Samsung introduced a compact music player that can receive satellite radio signals and is one of several MP3 players that could overtake Apple's iPod in the best-selling charts.

Japan's Sanyo has added high-definition video technology to its ultra-thin camcorders. Taiwan's Axion is promoting new widescreen portable DVD players. And Hewlett-Packard joins a host of other computer makers in offering notebook computers with built-in broadband networking equipment.
