New ranking of global NOR flash memory market in the first quarter of 2006: Spansion takes the top spot
2006-05-28 Silicon Valley Power

[] Market research firm iSuppli released its latest survey report, saying that in the first quarter of this year , Spansion, a joint venture between AMD and Fujitsu, ranked first in the global NOR flash memory chip market .

The research company said that in the first quarter of this year, Spansion 's NOR memory chip sales revenue reached US$ 562 million, although it was 6.5% lower than the sales revenue of US$ 601 million in the fourth quarter of last year , it still won the first place in the world; Intel ranked second with its NOR flash memory chip sales revenue of US$ 537 million, a 10.5% decrease from the sales revenue of US$ 600 million in the fourth quarter of last year ; STMicroelectronics ranked third with its NOR flash memory chip sales revenue of US$ 327 million, a 2.4% decrease from the sales revenue of US$ 335 million in the fourth quarter of last year .

Mark DeVoss, a senior analyst at the research firm , said that compared with the fourth quarter of last year, the sales revenue of the world's three largest NOR flash memory chip manufacturers in the first quarter of this year all declined. Since the global seasonal demand pattern for NOR flash memory chips is different from that of other storage chips, the decline in sales revenue of the world's three largest NOR flash memory chip manufacturers in the first quarter of this year was expected by the research company.

The exceptions were Micron Technology Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co., which both saw sales of NOR flash memory chips increase in the first quarter of this year compared with the fourth quarter of last year, the research firm said.

During 2004 and 2005 , declining sales hit many NOR flash memory chip manufacturers, who stopped increasing NOR flash memory chip production capacity and switched to foundry chip production. In response to this strategy, NAND flash memory chips are becoming more and more popular. The industry has found that more and more mobile phones will use NOR flash memory chips. Research companies say that with the widespread use of NOR flash memory chips in mobile phones and other consumer electronic devices, NOR flash memory chips will be scarce later this year.
