After disassembling Xiaomi Router AC2100, I still don’t understand why it is so big. [Copy link]

After disassembling Xiaomi Router AC2100, I still don’t understand why it is so big.

Today I disassembled a Xiaomi AC2100 router, a bucket-shaped router.
The size of this router is really big, about 21cm high and about 12cm in diameter.
On the side near the base are the reset button, power input port, and four network cable sockets, of which port 123 is a LAN port, and the fourth port is a WAN port.
There is a nameplate on the bottom, and you can see that the model is AC2100, with Wi-Fi in both 2.4G and 5G frequency bands.
Seeing the hollow design of the cylindrical shape and the bottom edge, I think it was designed by the same industrial designer as the Xiaomi Mijia Mosquito Repellent that I disassembled before ( after disassembling the Xiaomi Mosquito Repellent, I feel that the shell is much more valuable than the circuit board ).
Remove the rubber washer on the bottom to access the screws.
A thick iron sheet is added to the base, which not only increases the stability of the lower plate, but also makes users feel that it has weight.
After removing the bottom case, you can see the circuit board and radiator.
Next, you need to remove the top cover to see the two screws and remove them.
Just tap the cylinder gently to separate it into two pieces.
Are there so many Wifi antennas?
The circuit board and the heat sink are fixed together by three screws, and the heat sink is fixed to the plastic part inside by two screws.
Remove the board and heat sink from the plastic and unplug the antenna.
Remove the heat sink and shielding case.
Clean the thermal grease on the chip and check the device model.
MT7621AT : A dual-core network processor with a MIPS core clocked at 880MHz, including a 5-port Gigabit Ethernet switch, as well as numerous connectivity options such as RGMII, PCIe, USB, and SD-XC.
MT7603EN : 2.4G Wifi chip, supports 300Mbps PHY rate.
MT7615N : 2.4G and 5G dual-band Wi-Fi chip, supporting 1733Mbps PHY rate.
There are four SOT23-6 packaged DC-DC chips on the board. The two on the left are printed with 2979P, and the two on the right are printed with 396F8. The model cannot be found.
There is a 25V 470uF electrolytic capacitor at the 12V power input.
On the back of the board is the ESMT F59L1G81MB (2M) Flash chip. In addition, the crystal oscillators of the left and right devices are on the back of the board. The IPEX connectors of the two 2.4G antennas and the four antennas of the 5G chip are on the back of the board.
This is all the accessories of this router. The only feeling I had while disassembling it was that it was too big. In fact, if all the antennas of other routers were spread out, the size would probably not be small. But those routers give people the feeling that they do not take up much space, while this barrel-shaped router may be difficult to stuff into the gap between the table and the wall, hide behind a drawer, or put in a weak current box.

This design is equivalent to covering the traditional routing structure with a large shell. Various companies have this kind of design, including Huawei, Xiaomi, ZTE, TPLink, etc. The one from Xiaomi is already an obsolete old model. Most of the integral large-shell routers are square column-shaped, with some curved decorations on the edges. It is said that many people like this, and this type of router is also relatively expensive.   Details Published on 2024-9-2 23:26

The bigger the better. The heat sink is great. It can be used on the Raspberry Pi. The case can also hold the Raspberry Pi.

It seems that the appearance plays a major role.

It is indeed a good review!!!

There is still a lack of creative design... It's a pity that we always follow other people's designs.

A rectangular router is more suitable. The cylindrical one is not convenient to place.
