If the reverse leakage current of the freewheeling diode in the switching power supply is too large, will it cause thermal failure of the diode? [Copy link]

Of course, it goes without saying that it is a freewheeling diode, even if it is a diode for other normal purposes,,, A normal diode PN junction is damaged, resulting in leakage, which is caused by improper use, such as applying a high reverse voltage, which will eventually cause heat and failure.   Details Published on 2023-11-27 07:52

The loss of the freewheeling diode in the switching power supply can be divided into several parts: forward conduction loss, switching loss, reverse leakage loss... Among them, the reverse leakage loss is the smallest. The reverse leakage loss can be calculated based on the reverse leakage current in the datasheet.

I know how to calculate the forward conduction loss, but how do I calculate the switching loss of a diode?  Details Published on 2023-11-26 20:02

Switching loss is difficult to calculate. In the past, the loss was measured by measuring the instantaneous voltage and current product using an oscilloscope.  Details Published on 2023-11-26 20:36

If the reverse leakage current of the freewheeling diode in the switching power supply is too large, it will cause the diode to fail thermally. As the reverse leakage current increases, the heat generated by the diode will also increase. If the diode works under a large reverse leakage current for a long time, it may fail.

If the reverse leakage current of the freewheeling diode in the switching power supply is too large, it will cause increased power consumption and may cause damage.

Reverse leakage is uA level loss and is very small under normal circumstances
