Latches and Triggers

1. When do we need latches? The state cannot be maintained? The state of current microcontrollers can be maintained, right?

2. I see many products use Schmitt triggers as gate drivers (gate drivers). Is it for isolation or other purposes? What are the similarities and differences between this trigger and a dedicated gate driver?
