[GD32L233C-START Review] Unboxing [Copy link]

  • Package

The packaging is pretty good, with magnets attached. Inside is an anti-static bag containing a board. Although the space is a bit wasted, the box is made of cardboard and is easy to open with magnets. It can be used to store small tools, parts, etc. If it is an ordinary box, it will probably be thrown away after the courier opens it.

  • Overall functionality

  1. GD-LINK module: The board has GD-LINK built directly into it for easy debugging.
  2. USB : This microcontroller has a built-in USB communication interface, but it can only be used as a device.
  3. Power supply: 5V to 3.3V LDO117.
  4. Buttons: one reset button, one wakeup button, which can also be used as a user button.
  5. USB to serial port: CH340 is a very compact USB to serial port chip, which is convenient for debugging the communication function between the serial port and the host computer.
  6. LED light: There are 4 LED lights in total, which can be in different states, or flowing water.
  7. MCU : GDL233CC main control chip, ARMV8-M instruction set, Cortex- M23 core, 64M main frequency, 256K FLASH, 32K RAM. For a small microcontroller, this resource is quite luxurious.
  8. Debug extension interface: The interface is connected to debugging tools such as GD-LINK and JLINK.
  9. GPIO : Almost all IO are connected.
  10. Power expansion interface
  11. Boot mode selection interface
  12. Clock crystal oscillator: provides high-precision real-time clock for RTC.
  • Board Layout

I want to complain about the layout of this board:

1. GD-LINK: As a module, why not design it independently by punching or cutting, leaving only a few wires needed for connection, leaving pin headers on both sides, which can be broken off when not in use, and use GD-LINK alone to debug other boards, so that resources can be used effectively.

2. Crystal oscillator placement: As the heart of the microcontroller, the crystal oscillator must be reliable, with minimal interference, and placed as close as possible with short wiring. Why is it placed so far away and with such long wires? The board is relatively large, and it will look empty if it is not placed further away? Especially the crystal oscillator of GD-LINK, which is placed across the power supply. How careless!

3. USB: USB to serial port is okay, GD-LINK, go around a big bend and come back, this is a relatively large board, fly freely, this mini interface cable is really hard to find, I took the cable of the AVR microcontroller downloader back then and used it.

4. Symmetry: For a big board, the 4 screw holes are not symmetrical. The IO pin headers can be slightly adjusted on both sides. Symmetry is also a kind of beauty. The GD-LINK USB interface can be placed in the center of the board, forming an equilateral triangle with the other two, which is also a kind of beauty. As a person with obsessive-compulsive disorder, I also treat the board I design as a work of art. Sorry for the inconvenience!

5. There are only so many parts on the board, but the PCB is so big. The PCB is also charged by square meter. Rich people can spend lavishly, but don't waste resources.

  • Summarize
  1. As a small single-chip microcomputer, the master control has quite luxurious resources.
  2. The board has complete integrated debugging functions, including GD-LINK, serial port, and USB.
  3. The board layout design is not very particular. If we give it to our hardware engineer for reference and ask him why the crystal oscillator is designed in this way, he will say that the official layout is designed like this, and I am speechless!
  4. As an engineering student, you should also pursue beauty. Please treat each board as a work of art.

1. Your packaging with box makes me jealous . 2. I agree with what you said, cloth board doesn't seem to be very particular (it can be used after connecting it anyway ).   Details Published on 2022-2-23 16:08

Is there a USB cable? It's hard to find the cable for this USB port now.

Yes, this kind of interface should be eliminated. It is a waste of resources.  Details Published on 2022-2-22 06:13
