Big disaster! HP Japan accidentally deleted 77TB of important data from Kyoto University's supercomputer system

According to a bulletin on Kyoto University's homepage, the data loss incident occurred between December 14 and December 16, and a total of more than 34 million files in the /LARGE0 directory were deleted, with a total capacity of approximately 77 TB, of which 49 TB of data could be restored from backup and 28 TB of data was completely lost.
HP Japan also gave detailed information on the cause of the accident in the statement PDF.
HP's backup script for supercomputer systems uses the find command to locate and delete useless log files. Recently, HP Japan made some changes to the variable names passed to the find command in order to improve the "readability" of the program, and then updated the script in the system. However, it did not take into account that Bash would read and execute the script file in real time during operation. As a result, the backup program that was still being executed read the find command in the new script, which ultimately led to the accidental deletion of files.
In its "apology statement", HP Japan stated that it took full responsibility for the incident and promised compensation and follow-up.
Editor's note: Bash parses the shell script while executing it, rather than reading the script into memory all at once. If a new script overwrites the old script while it is executing, and the file's inode remains unchanged (for example, if you use `cp new.sh old.sh`, the content of old.sh changes, but the inode does not), then Bash will parse the updated content and execute it.
