Imagine walking into your living room and your smart TV automatically switching from your kid’s Netflix feed to yours. Or walking into your home office and your laptop waking up to greet you. Or walking to your car and having it automatically unlock the doors and then lock them when you leave. All of these use cases and more will be possible in the near future thanks to ultra-wideband technology (UWB).
By calculating the time it takes for radio signals to travel between devices, UWB radio technology can measure distance and location information with unparalleled accuracy (to within a few centimeters). The applications are nearly endless.
Today’s new smartphones are powered by UWB technology, which, when combined with the Internet of Things (IoT), provides connectivity and a host of new security services for businesses and consumers. UWB is currently being used for spatial awareness and applications such as AirDrop on the iPhone, which securely transfers data such as pictures between adjacent phones.
