A question about packaging [Copy link]

The above picture is a development board I bought. The first picture shows the 0603 capacitor package. I checked the 0603 manual and found that the vertical dimension is 0.8±0.1, while the package size is 0.8. I feel that it is a little small. It was soldered in the factory. If I solder it myself, do I need to make the package bigger? How much margin do you usually leave in the size?

If you think the recommended pad size is too small, you can enlarge it slightly. Enlarging both the X and Y axes by 30% should be enough.   Details Published on 2020-8-20 17:10

It’s up to you to manually solder 1 or even 30 pieces, as long as it doesn’t affect too much PCB area.

For mass production of PCB boards, the processing and welding process and PCB area cost must be considered

If the pad of a SMD device is too large, if it is mounted by a SMD machine, the steel mesh opening will be large, more solder paste will be applied, and the cost will be high.

Manual welding, the patch pad is enlarged, welding is easy, and it looks uncomfortable, purely to make up for the poor welding level

Draw PCB package library, it is recommended to use standard size

Don't we need to add some margin to the standard size? If so, will manual welding be too difficult and easy to make mistakes?  Details Published on 2020-8-12 15:07

I always use my own package, which is slightly larger than the standard package. I have tried machine mounting, machine welding and manual mounting and welding repeatedly. Only by slightly increasing the size can I ensure the one-time qualified rate of finished products. The standard pad is a package for large-scale production with a guaranteed production process.

The size of 0603 is not small, I used to do manual soldering of 0603 and it was OK. My habit is to follow the standard by default. If I am not sure, I will adjust it according to the limit size in the datasheet.

For example, for the size given in your figure, just draw it according to 0.8+0.1=0.9.

If you solder by yourself, you can enlarge the pad if there is space, so that it is easier to solder the iron. If it is machine-mounted, it is best to strictly follow the recommended packaging, otherwise the patch will drift
