You can make your own protocol, which is usually not made public, and it is useless to make it public. Or you can modify the public protocol, but then it loses its universality, which is equivalent to making your own protocol in disguise.

Aren't the three terms you mentioned zigbee? I've seen devices that can be set to any device, but I've never seen one that can have several identities at the same time.

In ZigBee devices, an end device can only be an end device, a router can only be a router, and a co-ordinator can only be a co-ordinator
