The MC33260 is an active power factor controller thatfunctions as a boost pre–converter which, meetinginternational standard requirement in electronic ballast andoff–line power supply application. MC33260 is designed todrive a free running frequency discontinuous mode, it canalso be synchronized and in any case, it features veryeffective protections that ensure a safe and reliableoperation.This circuit is also optimized to offer extremely compactand cost effective PFC solutions. It does not entail the needof auxiliary winding for zero current detection hence asimple coil can be used instead of a transformer if theMC33260 Vcc is drawn from the load (please refer to page19 of the data sheet). While it requires a minimum numberof external components, the MC33260 can control thefollower boost operation that is an innovative modeallowing a drastic size reduction of both the inductor and thepower switch. Ultimately, the solution system cost issignificantly lowered.Also able to function in a traditional way (constant outputvoltage regulation level), any intermediary solutions can beeasily implemented. This flexibility makes it ideal tooptimally cope with a wide range of applications.This application note will discuss on the design of powerfactor correction circuit with MC33260 with traditionalboost constant output voltage regulation level operation andfollower boost variable output voltage regulation leveloperation.
