Beware of ActiveX plug-ins that can become accomplices of viruses when surfing the Internet safely[Copy link]
ActiveX plug-ins make web page content richer. For example, users can play Flash animations, watch movies online, and perform online antivirus in IE browser. ActiveX plug-in technology integrates the program itself with IE browser and expands the functions of IE. The common 3721 Network Assistant and Baidu Search Companion rely on this technology. However, installing too many ActiveX plug-ins will consume too many resources, causing the system to run unstably. What's more, viruses and Trojans also target ActiveX plug-ins, so it is easy to be infected with viruses and Trojans when browsing web pages.
ActiveX plug-ins are a double-edged sword .
1. Plug-in application, so simple.
For some friends who build websites, such as using ASP programs to build their own websites, ActiveX plug-ins are often used to expand ASP functions. Of course, to use ActiveX plug-ins, you must first install them, which can be achieved using the Regsvr32.exe command. Take the installation of the "rtj.dll" plug-in file in the root directory of disk D as an example. In Windows, click "Start -> Run" and a Run dialog box will pop up. Enter the command "Regsvr32 d:\rtj.dll" and press Enter. A dialog box "DllRegisterServer in rtj.dll succeeded" will pop up, indicating that the plug-in has been successfully installed. In the future, users can call the plug-in provided by rtj.dll in ASP web pages. To uninstall this plug-in, just enter the command "Regsvr32 /u d:\rtj.dll" in the Run dialog box.
2. Danger is everywhere. However, while
ActiveX plug-ins provide us with convenience, virus and Trojan makers also recognize its advantages. They embed harmful programs into web pages. When users browse the web pages, through the installation of ActiveX plug-ins, viruses and Trojans quietly sneak into your computer. At this time, many users may not realize that your computer is already in danger. From the above application of ActiveX plug-ins, it can be seen that it is very easy to call ActiveX plug-ins in web pages, making ActiveX plug-ins a good parasitic infection medium for viruses and Trojans. In addition, installing too many ActiveX plug-ins in IE browser will also affect the stability of Windows system, and conflicts between plug-in programs are easy to occur. These insecurity and instability factors also lead to users' aversion to ActiveX plug-ins.
Managing ActiveX plug-ins
In order to ensure the stable operation of the system, prevent conflicts between plug-in programs, and the invasion of viruses and Trojans, it is very important to strictly manage ActiveX plug-ins. Of course, there are many specific management methods. The following author will introduce several common management solutions.
1. Kill harmful plug-ins
The main hazards to the security of the user's system are harmful ActiveX plug-ins disguised as viruses and Trojans, and many anti-virus software now provide the function of filtering harmful ActiveX plug-ins. The following author takes Kingsoft Antivirus 2005 as an example. In the main window of Kingsoft Antivirus, click "Tools → Comprehensive Settings", switch to the "Antivirus Settings" tab in the pop-up settings dialog box, click the "User Customization" button at the bottom, switch to the "Embedded Antivirus" tab in the "Customization" dialog box, and then select the "Scan downloaded and run ActiveX controls" option. After clicking the "OK" button, most harmful ActiveX plug-ins can be prevented. The setting methods of other anti-virus software are basically the same. Of course, users should pay attention to frequently upgrading the virus database of the anti-virus software to ensure that the latest harmful ActiveX plug-ins are detected and killed.
2. Manage existing plug-ins
If your Windows XP system has installed the SP2 patch package, then the IE browser has a built-in ActiveX plug-in management function, which can be used to manage existing plug-ins. After clicking "Tools → Manage Add-ons" in the IE browser, the "Manage Add-ons" settings dialog box pops up (as shown in the figure), and then select "Add-ons already used by Internet Explorer" in the "Show" drop-down list box. In this way, all existing ActiveX plug-ins in the system are displayed in the list box. It is very simple to disable an ActiveX plug-in. Select the ActiveX plug-in in the list box, then select the "Disable" option in the "Settings" column below, and finally click the "OK" button. It is also very simple to enable the ActiveX plug-in again. Follow the above method, but the difference is to select the "Enable" option in the "Settings" column.
3. Shield useless plug-ins
There are more and more useful ActiveX plug-ins on the Internet. Although most of them can enrich the content of web pages and enhance the functions of IE browsers, installing too many ActiveX plug-ins will cause system instability. The author recommends that general users install ActiveX plug-ins selectively and shield those unnecessary ActiveX plug-ins. Although some ActiveX plug-ins can be shielded by modifying the registry, the operation is more troublesome. Here the author still recommends using a third-party plug-in management tool, so that the shielding operation of ActiveX plug-ins becomes simple, such as using the King plug-in immunity tool AntiX. Through the above steps, the ActiveX plug-ins in the system are strictly managed, which can guarantee the stable operation of the system to the greatest extent and prevent the invasion of viruses and Trojans.
