DC power can also be controlled via fiber optics. This circuit provides an isolated speed control channel for small DC motors (≤1/12hp). The control logic is an independent module that consumes 300mW of power at 12V and can be powered by a battery. The control module provides infrared pulses at a speed of 160Hz and a duty cycle determined by the position of the speed adjustment potentiometer. The programmable single-junction multivibrator pulses approximately 10mA to the GFOE1A1 at duty cycles ranging from 1% to 99%.
