When do you celebrate your Little New Year? [Copy link]

I wish you all a happy Little New Year and a happy New Year! I used to only know that the 23rd day of the twelfth lunar month was the Little New Year. It was not until recent years that I learned that the dates for the Little New Year in the north and south are different. In some places, it is the 24th day of the twelfth lunar month. Why are the dates for the Little New Year different? Check the information for popular science: The emperors of the Qing Dynasty began to worship gods in Kunning Palace on the 23rd day of the twelfth lunar month every year since the reign of Emperor Yongzheng. At the same time, the emperors also worshipped the Kitchen God. Later, the royal family and the Baylor followed suit and worshipped the Kitchen God on the 23rd day of the twelfth lunar month. Since then, there has been a distinction between officials and civilians celebrating the Little New Year on different days. In the Republic of China, the saying "officials celebrate the third day, civilians celebrate the fourth day, and boatmen celebrate the fifth day" was formed among the people. The Little New Year for officials is the 23rd day of the twelfth lunar month, for civilians it is the 24th day of the twelfth lunar month, and for people on the water it is the 25th day of the twelfth lunar month. Some places have passed down this tradition to this day. Where are you from? When do you celebrate the Little New Year in your place? What do you eat during the Little New Year?

Isn't it always the 23rd? In previous years, there were some cultural evenings during the New Year's Eve, and they were all held on the 23rd. Is there really any other date?

The Kitchen God Festival is more important in the countryside, but people in the city don't seem to pay much attention to this day, at least in Shanghai. I have lived here for so many years and have never seen my neighbors pay much attention to the Little New Year. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that Shanghai is a city of immigrants.

I remember when I was a kid, we would do a thorough cleaning on the Little New Year’s Day. Now I don’t do it that much anymore. I just remember to have a good meal to celebrate the festival.  Details Published on 2018-2-8 15:21

During the Little New Year’s Day, we offer sacrifices to the Kitchen God and baked cakes are among the offerings in the rural areas.
