Digital management of power distribution: IEC104 to OPC UA gateway

With the development of hydropower plant automation, there are more and more cascade hydropower stations of a certain scale. In order to realize unmanned operation (less manned operation) of hydropower stations and take energy-saving control into consideration, power plants adopt centralized monitoring. Centralized monitoring focuses on the safe and stable operation of the entire power grid and the voltage, frequency and power demand of the entire power grid. Therefore, it mainly collects IEC104 telemetry (active power, reactive power, voltage, frequency) and switch quantities (circuit breakers, disconnectors) of power plants.
The power protocol gateway needs to collect detailed information of the power station, collect all the measurement point information of the subordinate power stations, and control the power plant equipment and load; that is, to collect and process data, monitor safe operation, dispatch operation, control and manage each power plant, and is responsible for receiving various instructions from the superior dispatcher and conveying the required data to the superior dispatcher, so as to effectively monitor, dispatch, control and manage the entire power station. The IEC104 protocol has the advantages of high reliability, good real-time performance, sufficient data flow, and support for network transmission, providing a good solution for telecontrol communication of hydropower plants.
The IEC104 power protocol gateways all use the BE115 monitoring system independently developed by Rhenium Technology. The data acquisition communication between the power dispatch center and subordinate power stations all uses the IEC104 protocol for communication. BE115 collects various information transmitted from the local control unit of each power station, such as unit load adjustment, switch station process and gate start/stop, etc.
