Are there no places for middle-aged people in big companies? Huawei has only 28% of employees under 30 years old, while Tencent has 41.9% [Copy link]

Recently, Huawei disclosed data on employee age ratio, gender ratio, and educational background in its 2021 Sustainability Report. Regarding gender ratio, Huawei's male employees accounted for 79.5% in 2021, while female employees accounted for 20.5%. In terms of educational background, Huawei employees with a master's degree accounted for the highest proportion, reaching 46%, with a bachelor's degree accounting for 41%, a doctorate or above accounting for 4%, and others accounting for 9%.

In terms of age ratio, in 2021, 70% of Huawei's global employees were between 30 and 50 years old, 2% were over 50 years old, and 28% were under 30 years old.

Huawei was once embroiled in controversy over the topic of "cleaning out employees over 34 years old." As early as 2017, there were rumors that Huawei was cleaning out employees over 34 years old. "Huawei China has begun to focus on cleaning out delivery engineering maintenance personnel over 34 years old, while R&D has begun to focus on clearing out old employees over 40 years old, mainly programmers." At the time, Huawei officials said the news was pure rumor.

In July this year, during a discussion between Huawei's Executive Supervisor Chen Lifang and new employees, an employee asked, "What do you think of Huawei's employees over 35 years old? What suggestions do you have for the '35-year-old crisis'?"

Chen Lifang said that some rumors about Huawei employees over 34 years old were inaccurate. "I'm already over 35, but I still work very hard and enjoy my job. Because I'm busy, I feel like every day goes by very fast. So I don't think age is a problem. The key is your ability and whether you can keep learning and improving."

Some netizens believe that since Huawei employees under 30 years old only account for 28%, the rumor that Huawei employees aged 35 were fired is self-defeating. However, some people questioned that the report did not show the distribution of the 30 to 50 age group, and employees aged 30-35 may account for a larger proportion.

In May, Tencent also released the "Tencent Sustainable Social Value Report 2021", introducing the age and gender composition of Tencent employees.

Data shows that Tencent has a total of 68,226 employees in 2021, of which 41.9% are under the age of 30, 70.9% are male employees, and 29.1% are female employees. In comparison, Huawei has 13.9% fewer employees under the age of 30 than Tencent.

In recent years, "35-year-old anxiety" seems to have become a common social emotion, especially in the Internet technology industry where the work intensity is high and the technology iteration is fast.

Last year, Maimai Data Research Institute conducted statistics on the average age of employees in large Internet technology companies. The results showed that the average age of employees in these companies was between 27 and 33 years old.

Among them, the average age of Huawei employees is 31 years old, the youngest at ByteDance and Pinduoduo are 27 years old, Tencent and Meituan are 29 years old, and Alibaba is 31 years old.

360 founder and CEO Zhou Hongyi once talked about the issue of "employees being eliminated at the age of 35 in large companies", saying that he totally did not understand why employees at the age of 35 would be eliminated.

"I don't know why, but Chinese people seem to be old when they turn 35. I don't quite understand this statement. In Silicon Valley, many key programmers are over 35. If a person has not written 100,000 lines of code, he or she will not be a good programmer. Although people over 35 may not be able to stay up late, they can make full use of their experience."

If they take good care of themselves, the retirement age for mental workers should be at least 55 years old, except for those who were exhausted by overtime work in the early stage.   Details Published on 2022-9-15 10:00

It's normal. If I were the boss of the company, I would be even more ruthless than now. There is no way to be reasonable or legal.

If you are desperate, start your own business. If you can't be colleagues, become opponents.

This is not explained clearly. We usually talk about the younger programmers, but a large company cannot have only programmers. There are many people in various jobs. So it is inevitable that the proportion of people over 30 years old is high. After all, academic qualifications are a barrier. When you graduate from college, graduate school, or even doctoral degree, you will be over 30 after working in society for a few years, right?

So I don’t think age is a problem. The key is your ability and whether you can keep learning and improving. This is what I think is the most correct.

30-50, haha, break it down into 30-35, 35-40, 40+, and then you will find that this report is just playing word games.

Programmers in their thirties who do not have good development or management experience are not only not wanted by large companies, but also not necessarily by small companies. The cost-effectiveness is indeed not comparable to that of young programmers.

It is becoming less and less friendly to middle-aged people.

It's the same both at home and abroad. A certain large company has opened many training courses to make programmers cheap. Originally, a job that involves copying and pasting does not need such high requirements. It is estimated that programmers can leave at the age of 30, and it costs a lot of money to dismiss older workers. However, with the rise of the Internet and the increase in the number of languages, programmers can stay longer. Basically, they can still make it at the age of 35. If they cannot reach the supervisor level, their cost-effectiveness is not as good as that of young people.

After graduation, you can work/study at Huawei for a few years, or accumulate some experience and wealth over the next decade or so. Basically, when you graduate at the age of 35, you will be able to stand out on your own!

Suddenly I realized that my career is so short. Now I am in middle age and I don’t know what to do next.

50 years old is even more of a hurdle. No company, big or small, wants me to work for them. It seems I have to either retire or become self-employed.

No company or organization will openly use age as a hard elimination indicator, unless it is the statutory retirement age, otherwise it will constitute a violation of the law. Obviously, Huawei cannot have such a policy. However, the rumors are not groundless. In performance appraisal, corresponding goals are set, and the higher the position, the longer the length of service, the higher the salary, etc., the higher the standards are set. In this way, "soft elimination" is beyond words.

However, it is also true that many people gradually lack the space for career advancement after the age of 30. This is due to the competitive pressure from young people and the burden of their own families, but more importantly, it is the influence of cultural attributes on themselves. There are really not many people who can surpass this. For companies, old employees with increasingly reduced career advancement space obviously lack cost-effectiveness and may even gradually deteriorate and affect others, so it is normal to use the "soft elimination" system. As the saying goes, "everyone is equal before the rules", if you are good, continue to work, if you are not good, leave.

When you are old, you are not popular anywhere, unless you have very strong skills. Generally speaking, it is better for the strong people to just hire college students.

Oh, it's so cruel. Although the legal retirement age is 60, how many companies will let you work until 60? It feels like it's a long way to go to find a job at 40 or 50.

When I graduated from college, I thought I could work for a factory until I retired. But when I entered the society, I found that it was not the case at all. Only our parents were like that. We were just guinea pigs. Many people had to change jobs frequently. How could we expect to work there until retirement? My dream was shattered.  Details Published on 2022-9-4 22:22
