Renovation of old things - updating a 1T SSD for a 2015 MacBook Pro - patching it up for another 5 years [Copy link]

This post was last edited by IC Crawler on 2022-5-30 18:33

My main laptop is the 13-inch version of the MacBook Pro 2015 256g, which is divided into two partitions, with macOS and Win installed. I don’t know how I have been using it for so many years.

Actually, I knew I could install an SSD myself a few years ago, but the price was too expensive at that time, and it took a lot of courage to reinstall a bunch of software environments in the computer. Recently, no matter how much I optimize the win system, there is only 6g of available space left, so I bought a 1TB SSD these days, and still installed dual systems, with the two partitions 50-50, so it won’t be a problem to last another 5 years. (New computers are too expensive, and the slightly decent ones cost more than 10,000 yuan)

Regarding the choice of SSD, my computer supports PCIE2.0*4, so I only need to choose NVMe PCIE3.0, and there is no need to buy PCIE4.0 disk. In addition, the SSD used in the notebook needs to pay attention to the problem of heating, so it is very necessary to choose one with better temperature control. Finally, I decided to choose one between Western Digital and Zhitai. In fact, I still want to support the domestic Zhitai, but JD has been out of stock recently, and no one has tried to use this disk to upgrade on MacBook after searching the entire network. I was also afraid of encountering compatibility issues, so I finally bought Western Digital's sn570. It is said that sn550 is better, but JD is still out of stock.

The sn570 is quite satisfactory in all aspects, which is enough for me. This disk has only one storage chip, and the entire circuit board with the controller has very few components. It looks very simple, much simpler than the original disk. It seems that the technological progress in recent years is really great.

This is the first time I’ve disassembled the computer I bought in 2015. The inside is very clean, without any dust accumulation like other laptops:

The battery is not swollen either

After installing it, I tested the speed. It is slightly faster than the original hard disk. The main limitation is that my laptop only has a PCIE2.0 interface.

All in all, I am quite satisfied with this upgrade. I would also like to thank the forum for using the 550 e-coins I had saved up.

I also have a laptop I bought in 2007, which is still usable. I bought a laptop in 2013. I changed the keyboard and it is still usable. I'm currently using a 17-year-old, with an SSD installed. Still working hard. I also want to replace the two SSDs, but they can only be replaced with SATA interfaces. I want to do it. Otherwise...   Details Published on 2022-6-2 11:55

The new models nowadays are all welded and cannot be expanded by themselves. The previous design is better.

Doing so can indeed make the laptop design thinner and lighter, and it also forces you to make a choice between wallet and capacity. If the budget is in place, then naturally "I want it all"  Details Published on 2022-5-30 14:20

With the advancement of technology, the capacity of a single chip can easily reach over 1T, and there are fewer peripheral devices.  Details Published on 2022-5-30 14:22

The current ones are all soldered. I have replaced the SSD before and it is really good. Apple laptops are actually much more cost-effective than other computers. I have an 11-year-old laptop and have used it for almost 10 years. Unfortunately, the discrete graphics card I had was faulty, otherwise it would have run for another 5 years without any problems.

Awesome! My 2015 is still too expensive to buy a Mac. My previous iMac Pro still has a mechanical hard drive. Can you please guide me to change it to an SSD? Thanks in advance!

This discount is great. After reading this, I also want to upgrade my SSD. I always feel that the capacity of SSD is too small to store too many things.
