[GD32L233C-START Review] Review 1: Unboxing Review, Chip Architecture Level Review [Copy link]

The GD32L233 series of low-power microcontrollers are Cortex-M23 core MCUs based on the ArmV8-M architecture of GigaDevice Innovation. They use the leading 40nm ultra-low power (ULP) manufacturing technology, and low-leakage physical units reduce power consumption from the hardware level. The highest main frequency is 64MHz, integrating 64KB to 256KB of embedded eFlash and 16KB to 32KB of SRAM, as well as various enhanced I/O and peripheral resources connected to two APB buses. The streamlined and powerful Armv8-M instruction set and fully optimized bus design bring efficient processing capabilities, including independent multipliers and dividers, which will be executed on the AHB bus according to different purposes and target storage spaces. The memory organization adopts the ARMv8M structure, pre-defined memory mapping and up to 4GB of storage space, which fully guarantees the flexibility and scalability of the system. It is suitable for low-power, energy-efficient and deeply embedded application scenarios.

In order to improve the security of the platform, ARM launched the ARMv8m architecture, which introduced the Trustzone security extension. This technology mainly uses isolation technology to divide the address space into secure and non-secure areas, achieving space isolation. Here we call it the secure world and the non-secure world. The switching/interaction between the two worlds is achieved through several instructions added to the instruction set (SG/BXNX/BLXNX). ARMv8M architecture: Focusing on security and low power consumption, security is the first priority in the IOT era.

The GD32L233 series MCU achieves excellent power efficiency, with the deep sleep current reduced to 2uA, the wake-up time less than 10uS, and the standby current as low as 0.4uA. In deep sleep mode, it can be triggered by a variety of system clocks and peripheral interfaces, supporting multiple wake-up sources including Low power Timer, Low power UART, RTC, LCD, standard I2C, USART, etc. The GD32L233 series has rich on-chip resources. The MCU provides up to 4 general 16-bit timers, 2 basic timers and 1 32-bit low power timer, as well as standard and advanced communication interfaces: up to 2 USARTs, 2 UARTs, 1 low power LPUART, 3 I2C, 2 SPI, 1 I2S and 1 USB 2.0 FS controller. Among them, the 32-bit Low power Timer and Low power UART can run in Deep-sleep1/2 mode and wake up the MCU. In terms of analog peripherals, it also integrates a 12-bit ADC with a sampling rate of 1MSPS, a 12-bit DAC and two comparators.
