[BG22-EK4108A Bluetooth Development Kit] Part 1: Unboxing and Simplicity Studio Environment Installation [Copy link]

This post was last edited by Digital Leaf on 2022-1-2 23:23

This time the board was shipped silently, and then I received it. However, the express packaging was a bit thin, and I felt that it was not safe for the board.

It’s just a thin bag, it can’t even be called a bubble bag.

The board is very mini, and it comes with a micro USB cable. This short cable goes well with the board.

Regarding the BG22-EK4108A Bluetooth development kit, the data page has this description

The BG22 Explorer Kit is an ultra-low-cost, small form factor development and evaluation platform focused on rapid prototyping and concept creation for Bluetooth LE IoT applications. The kit features a USB interface, an onboard SEGGER J-Link debugger, a user LED and push button, and support for hardware add-on boards via mikroBus header and Qwiic connectors. Hardware add-on support allows developers to create and prototype applications using various combinations of off-the-shelf boards from mikroE, Sparkfun, AdaFruit and Seeed Studios .

Therefore, the board already includes debugging tools and debugging chips, and only a software environment is needed.

Since this is the first time I use a Silicon Labs development board, I need to install the software environment first. On the activity page, I can find that the required software is Simplicity Studio 5.

Find the download address of Simplicity Studio 5 from the official website

https://cn.silabs.com/development-tools/wireless/bluetooth/bg22-explorer-kit

It still supports all platforms. After downloading, it is an iso image file. Install it after decompression

After the software is installed, there are two ways to continue the installation. The first one is more direct and clear, but you must first connect the board to the computer.

After connecting with micro USB, the board does not need to install any new drivers, and it can be recognized directly. This may be because the computer has the JLink driver before.

Install it all the way, you don't have to worry about it

After a while, all installations are completed and you will be prompted to the Welcome page.

Everything went smoothly until the Welcome screen. After clicking Start, things started to go wrong. The software froze N times. It would freeze whenever the mouse was clicked anywhere. I restarted the software repeatedly, and the results were surprisingly consistent. I could not operate the mouse, or it would freeze. It was not until the N+1th time that the software could be used normally.

In the lanucher interface, the hardware, firmware, and information of the board are listed here, as well as demos, examples, etc.

At this point, the first step, the software environment installation is done. As for Simplicity Studio 5, it is quite resource-intensive. After installation, the hard disk occupies 6.77G. For memory, the usage rate is also not low. This is the first time I use Simplicity Studio. I don’t know how the previous version is. This one must have a lot of room for optimization.
