Key findings

• The Mbed community consists of skilled embedded software developers. 44% of users use Mbed for professional purposes.
• 70% of professional developers are familiar with IoT, and 63% of professional developers use Mbed to build IoT projects.
• More than 80% of IoT projects built with Mbed are in production within 12 months.
• Industrial automation and smart spaces are two major areas of Mbed application.
• About half of Mbed users have adopted Mbed OS 6.
• The Mbed online compiler is still widely used in academia, but for professionals and enthusiasts, Mbed Studio has become the most popular IDE.
• Security is a significant concern in the IoT industry. More than 50% of companies working on IoT projects are likely to increase BOM to prevent malicious firmware updates and unauthorized use.
• The top three cloud services used by professional Mbed developers are AWS (47%), Azure (27%), and Google (21%).
• More than half of amateur developers said that building Mbed projects helped them learn new skills that will benefit their careers.

The Mbed community is mainly composed of three groups of users: professionals, enthusiasts, and academics. In 2020, 44% of users used Mbed to build projects that have been put into production or are about to be put into production.
