Arm plans to increase licensing fees for some customers, and chip costs may increase by 4 times! What do you think about this? [Copy link]

Semiconductor technology supplier ARM has proposed raising licensing fees for some customers in recent negotiations, according to Reuters, citing four people familiar with the matter. Two people familiar with the matter said that in recent talks, ARM's sales representatives asked for price increases that would increase the overall licensing costs for some customers by as much as four times.

The price hikes have prompted some licensees to consider non-ARM alternatives, two people familiar with the matter said. ARM said it does not comment on pricing negotiations.

What do you think about this matter?

Is RISC-V their own? Why does ARM immediately ask for RISC-V? Isn't RISC-V an instruction set? Doesn't it cost money to implement it?   Details Published on 2020-7-20 14:21

This move is expected to push many customers to embrace RISC-V

The medium-sized chip we are currently working on is a three-core chip, M4, DSP, and RISC-V

In fact, even if ARM does not increase its price, I guess we will abandon ARM after the risc-v platform becomes stable. If the price increases, I guess we will definitely not use it.

And another large-scale chip project used two risc-v cores, neither of which used ARM

This is giving MIPS an opportunity. It's really a chain reaction. Damn it...

Although hardware is the foundation, applications and ecology are more critical now. This will give other MCUs more opportunities.

A 4-fold increase in licensing fees is completely different from a 4-fold increase in chip costs. The two have different bases and huge differences in amounts...

The increase in licensing fees will ultimately affect the costs of chip terminal users.

It seems that I have to try RISC-V. There are so many variables these days. It is definitely risky to use American chips.
