Application Note (AN4509) Measuring Inclination Using a Low-g Triaxial Accelerometer [Copy link]

This application note introduces the theory of tilt detection and the tilt angle measurement method for a low-g triaxial accelerometer. In general, the procedures described here can also be applied to triaxial analog or digital accelerometers, depending on their respective specifications.

Low g MEMS accelerometers are widely used for tilt sensing in consumer and industrial applications such as screen rotation and automotive security alarm systems. Another widespread use of low g accelerometers is in tilt-compensated electronic compasses for map conversion and personal navigation devices. This application note describes how to accurately measure the tilt angle relative to the local earth's horizontal plane by compensating for some non-ideal factors that may cause errors in the calculation of the angle of tilt. For more information and device specifications, please refer to the relevant accelerometer data sheet available at http://www.st.com. In general, three-axis analog or digital accelerometers can also be used, depending on their respective specifications.
