Why use ultrasonic testing for flow meters? [Copy link]

Ultrasonic sensing uses the time of flight (TOF) of ultrasound waves in any liquid or gaseous medium and its dependence on flow velocity to measure and calculate volume flow. The technology exploits the difference in propagation time of ultrasound waves when they propagate in the direction of the flow and against the flow. The technology is reliable and precise in measuring volume flow over a wide dynamic range.

The MSP430 Ultrasonic Sensing SoC facilitates a unique waveform capture-based technique where the entire response of the sensor is captured in the time domain for both upstream and downstream conditions. These waveforms are post-processed to determine the differential time of flight (TOF).
