ECG-based heart rate monitoring using the LaunchPad Value Line development kit using the MSP430G2452 microcontroller

Abstract This application report describes a low-cost, heart rate monitoring solution based on the MSP430 LaunchPad Value Line Development Kit (MSP-EXP430G2), which uses an MSP430G2xx microcontroller (MCU). The electrocardiogram (EKG) signal is amplified and filtered by a daughter board before being sent to the microprocessor for sampling and processing. The beat-per-minute heart rate data is transmitted to the computer via the reverse channel UART-overUSB on the LaunchPad. Furthermore, data can be wirelessly transmitted using the SimplicitTI network protocol via an eZ430 radio frequency (RF) target connected to the six pins on the daughter board. The system can be powered by USB power, a CR2032 3V coin cell battery, or two AA/AAA batteries.
