The SRNS relocation mechanism in the UMTS network is analyzed and studied. In view of the defect that the traditional SRNS relocation takes too long in the hard handover process, a new SRNS relocation mechanism is proposed. In this mechanism, SGSN uses the bicasting technology to enable the mobile station after the handover to access the new cell as quickly as possible, reducing the packet loss. The simulation results show that the new mechanism can reduce the packet loss rate during the handover process by about 15%.
