Radius and Controlling Radius Radius The radius is a straight line from the center point to the surface of an arc or circle. The symbol for radius is R. When the symbol R is used, a tolerance zone defined by two arcs (minimum radius and maximum radius) is created. The part surface must lie within the tolerance zone. Controlling Radius The controlling radius is a radius that does not allow straight and opposite arcs. The symbol for controlling radius is CR. When CR is used, a tolerance zone defined by two arcs (minimum radius and maximum radius) is created. The part surface lies within the tolerance zone in the shape of a crescent and is not straight and opposite arcs. Statistical Tolerance Symbol The statistical tolerance symbol indicates that the dimensional tolerance being applied was established by statistical methods. When this symbol is used on a drawing, the part shape is produced using statistical process control. The symbol is followed by a note, as shown in the following figure: When the shape is defined as a statistical tolerance, it is produced using statistical process control. The statistical tolerance symbol applies to the tolerance value of a dimensional tolerance or a geometric tolerance control.
