Many devices use a 32768 Hz crystal; following aremany reasons for choosing this frequency. First of all, itis a power of two, i.e., 32768 is the fifteenth power oftwo. If an oscillator driven by a 32768 Hz crystal isfollowed by a divide by 215 circuit, one-second ticks areobtained. Manufacturing techniques have beendeveloped to build these crystals with very highprecision. Thus, oscillators can employ these crystals todevelop one-second ticks with the same percentageaccuracy of the crystal frequency. This is why 32768 Hzcrystals are so widely used in digital watches and othertime-keeping functions.
