The core component of the chip-type oxygen sensor developed by Xie Guangyuan is a flat chip. The chip is like a test paper. Once it detects incomplete fuel combustion, it will feedback control the engine through the on-board computer, and then through the three-way catalytic converter to minimize exhaust pollution. The key material of the chip is zirconium oxide, a high-grade fire-resistant, corrosion-resistant and oxygen-ion conductive material. As early as when he was studying, Xie Guangyuan was studying the preparation method of zirconium oxide. It was not until 2006 that Xie Guangyuan finally trial-produced the best preparation method of zirconium oxide. Zirconium oxide produced with independent ingredients is much cheaper than imported goods, which also gave Xie Guangyuan the motivation to develop chip-type oxygen sensors and their chips.
