Apple may not add new health sensors to this year's redesigned Apple Watch Series 7, opting instead to improve the device's battery life, according to rumors and recent reports.
Kuo said the Series 7, expected to be launched in September, could be the first major redesign of the Apple Watch in several years. As part of the redesign, which could include a square casing similar to the iPhone 12 or iPad Pro, Apple is also said to be using a new double-sided system-in-package (SIP) technology to reduce the size of the processor.
A new report from Economic Daily News suggests that the smaller "S7" chip will free up internal space for a larger battery or additional health sensors. However, according to multiple reports from sources predicting Apple's plans, Apple is expected to hold off on adopting the other sensors until 2022 at the earliest.
This may leave enough room for Apple to increase the internal battery capacity. The 44mm Apple Watch Series 6 uses a 1.17Wh battery, which is 3.5% larger than the battery in the Series 5, while the 40mm Apple Watch Series 6 includes a 1.024Wh battery, which is 8.5% larger than the battery in the Series 5. However, despite the increase in charging speed, the addition of new features and sensors to successive Apple Watch models has kept battery life levels relatively stable over the years.
In addition to potential battery improvements, the Apple Watch Series 7 is also expected to feature improved wireless connectivity, the U1 Ultra Wideband chip, thinner display bezels, and the use of new lamination technology.
